HIGH OFFICIAL IN BULGARIA PRESSURED TO RESIGN DUE TO CORRUPTION CONTROVERSY
09:00 Wed 30 May 2007

National Investigation Service (NSI) head Angel Alexandrov is being pressured to resign.

Angelov is allegedly involved in a corruption controversy uncovered in the beginning of May 2007. The controversy began when Alexandrov said that Economy and Energy Minister Roumen Ovcharov threatened him.

On May 29 2007 Alexandrov testified in the Prosecution, mediapool.bg said. He also met Prosecutor-General Boris Velchev and the two discussed Alexandrov’s retirement.

“At this stage there is no answer to that matter,” Velchev said.

Velchev indirectly confirmed rumours that Alexandrov and Ovcharov might find themselves forced to leave their positions, mediapool.bg said.

According to unofficial information, Prosecution suspected that Alexandrov wanted former economy and energy minister Kornelia Ninova to intercede for a certain businessman before the gambling authorities.

After the eruption of the controversy, Alexandrov said that he was feeling innocent and would not resign.
