HEALTHCARE PUTS UNDER QUESTION EXISTENCE OF BULGARIA’S RULING COALITION
09:00 Mon 26 Feb 2007

Problems in the healthcare sector endanger Bulgaria’s ruling coalition, as opposition parties already tabled a no-confidence motion.

Some splits became evident in the coalition over it already, Novinar newspaper reported.

National Movement Simeon II (NMSII) called for unified position on the issue, NMSII member Atanas Shterev said. In case agreement does not surface, the three parties cannot continue forming a functioning Cabinet, he said.

It is unacceptable to lack a clear strategy on healthcare reforms for nearly two years, Shterev said.

NMSII and its coalition partner Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) had differing views on the issue, he said. This lack of agreement made the situation more complicated, Novinar reported.

The report said that BSP was worried by the unpredictability of the actions of its coalition partners.

Healthcare problems are not something that only BSP should look at, BSP member Atanas Merdzhanov said. All parties in the coalition and society have to get involved, Merdzhanov said.
