HEALTH MINISTRY WARNS BULGARIANS AGAINST TRANSPLANTATIONS IN PAKISTAN
15:09 Fri 05 Jan 2007

The Health and Foreign ministries warned Bulgarians of the dangers related to organ transplantations in Pakistan.

Warnings were released following several incidents involving Bulgarians, who underwent surgeries in Pakistan.

Serious health risks existed, related to organ transplantations in Pakistan, a press release sent to Bulgarian news agency BTA said.

Bulgaria could not exercise any control over the Pakistani hospitals performing such surgeries, the ministries said.

Bulgarians in need of organ transplantation faced problems because of the small number of donors and surgeries performed in Bulgaria.

Darik Radio reported that six Bulgarians died after kidney transplantations in Pakistan. The latest case occurred several days ago.

Surgeries in Pakistan were cheaper and donors could be found more easily than in Western Europe, the report said.
