Environmental organisation Greenpeace called on the Italian energy company Enel to give up its nuclear projects in Bulgaria and Romania.
Greenpeace activists came up with the slogan “Enel: do not export nuclear risk” on the last day of the 20th World Energy Congress, held in Rome, mediapool.bg reported.
At the same time, Enel CEO Fulvio Conti delivered his speech on the challenges before the energy sector in the conditions of liberalisation and execution of the Kyoto Protocol.
Greenpeace sent out a statement saying that after investing in the Slovakian nuclear power plant (NPP) Mochovce, Enel was planning to obtain 49 per cent of Bulgaria's Belene NPP. Enel’s intentions, combined with the Russian technologies and the country’s bad experience in nuclear safety, carried risks, Greenpeace said.
Conti did not pay much attention to the slogan and Greenpeace activists, who tried to spread unrest in the hall, mediapool.bg said. He confirmed Enel’s interest in nuclear projects abroad.
Conti told journalists that Enel was evaluating the projects for Belene and the new units of the Romanian Chernavoda NPP and was considering the amount of the investments it would offer.
