Greek authorities consider the possibility of importing electricity from Turkey, after two units of Bulgaria’s Kozloduy nuclear power plant (NPP) were closed on December 31 2006.
The country could suffer electricity shortage after the closure, especially in the summer, Greek newspaper Elevterotipia said.
Bulgaria was the main electricity exporter on the Balkans before the closure of the units.
Electricity shortage in the entire Balkan region resulted from the units’ closure and the drought, which lowered the production of hydro-electric plants, the news paper said.
Currently Greece was looking for alternative electricity suppliers, outside Bulgaria, Elevterotipia said. Romania and Turkey were among the suppliers considered.
In both cases the import will pass through Bulgaria’s electricity supply network, which is connected to the Greek one.
