GOVERNMENT WILL CONTINUE TO INCREASE INVESTMENTS IN HEALTHCARE - PM
09:27 Tue 16 Oct 2007

The increase in Government's capital investments in healthcare clearly showed the politics of modernisation of healthcare this Government followed, Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev said at the opening of two clinics in south Bulgaria.

In the presence of Regional Development Minister Assen Gagaouzov and Interior Minister Roumen Petkov, Stanishev opened the renovated Clinic for Infectious diseases and the Haematology Clinic at academic hospital Georgi Stranski in Pleven.

In 2005, the Government's capital investments in healthcare were around 33 million leva, while in 2007 this would be close to 70 million, Stanishev said. This showed clearly the politics we have been following, Stanishev added.

It is clear to us, that even the best specialists cannot work under bad circumstances, Stanishev said. This is why Government has spent so much on investments in healthcare and in the coming years this would increase, he added. Government would support the hospitals and the entire healthcare system in this process.

Asked about the teachers' strike, Stanishev said that even before the strike, Government proposed an increase of 200 million leva for those working in the educational system. We have always insisted on a modernisation of the system because there are many imperfections, he said.
