During its EU presidency Germany would get involved in the trial of the Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death for intentional HIV infection in Libya, Deutsche Welle reported.

Together with the European Commission, Germany was going to do everything possible to change the outcome of the trial, chancellor Angela Merkel said during a joint press conference with EC president Jose Manuel Barroso.

Barroso said that he hoped Libyan authorities would understand how important the trial was for the maintenance of co-operation with Europe.

Al Jazeera television reported Merkel and EU officials would work for the freedom of the nurses.

According to its report Barroso said that very soon officials would exercise maximum effort to solve the crisis.

Khaleej Times, issued in the United Arab Emirates, also reported on Germany's decision to get involved in the trial.

Libya Today reported that Libyan authorities have not responded yet to Merkel's statements.

The report said that after it became EU member, Bulgaria received assurances that the union would get even more involved in the case.
