German retailer Kaufland has said that it will invest more than 50 million euro to expand its storage facility in the village of Stryama, in southern Bulgaria.
The warehouse in Stryama is the stocking hub for all of the Kaufland stores in Bulgaria.
The announcement was made at the opening of the new Kaufland outlet in Pazardjik, the company's 12th in the country. The new outlet, costing 10 million euro, has a built up area of 5000 sq m and 200 parking spaces.
The company is currently building hypermarkets in Bourgas, Stara Zagora and Kyustendil.
“Kaufland's expansion in Bulgaria will continue and the company will have hypermarkets in all major cities. A total of 19 outlets were opened in the past two years and I think we are the only company in the country with as many launches of retail outlets larger than 5000 sq m each,” Kaufland Bulgaria sales director Hristo Petrov said.
Germany's discount market Lidl will soon open an outlet in Pazardjik, its first store in Bulgaria, offering already-established Austria retailer Billa yet another source of competition.
