The dramatic situation in Germany, related to the ratification of Bulgaria and Romania’s EU accession treaty represents the trap Europe can get into, related to the two countries’ membership.
Sofia and Bucharest’s preparation for membership is almost over, though both countries still face problems with organised crime, Dnevnik newspaper reported.
Yet, Brussels cannot afford to postpone the membership, since the political decision has already been taken, the German Spiegel reported. Germany, as well as France and the Netherlands is a country with stable political presence on the European scene but is already getting tired of its leading role, the newspaper reported.
Christian Democratic Union leader Angela Merkel gives direction to the political life in Germany. In 2006 Merkel said the accession treaties of Bulgaria and Romania need to be re-drafted as they lack enough restrictions to the access of workers from the country to the EU labour market.
Merkel’s political involvement created unofficial conditions for a cooler policy toward the enlargement process. Other German officials suggested a delay in the ratification procedure until the issuing of the final European Commission reforms report.
