GERB TO APPEAL ELECTION RESULTS IN BULGARIA'S VARNA
16:53 Mon 05 Nov 2007

The Varna branch of Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) brought an appeal to the Administrative Court and the Municipal election committee, in which it insisted that the municipal mayor and municipal councillor elections be declared invalid, Dnevnik daily reported.

GERB's main motive for appealing were substantial violations in conducting the elections and counting results. According to the Varna GERB representatives many of the section election committees missed the required number of ballots and envelopes. GERB was also unhappy with the fact that the Municipal election committee has not come up with a decision on even a single one of the almost 40 complaints they had after the first round of elections.

According to GERB the big discrepancies in the number of the people who voted and the number of valid votes, as well as the more than 500-vote difference between those who voted for mayor and those who voted for councillors would have been possible only if every voter would have used a separate list.

Another motive for GERB's demand to declare the elections invalid was that the election documents of over 4130 people who signed the election lists were found missing. 3116 ballots without envelopes were found for the mayor elections, and for the councillor elections 3826 which is a violation of the Law for local elections.
