10:00 Tue 12 Jun 2007

Open Society Institute head George Soros arrived in Bulgaria for the meeting of the International Steering Committee of the Roma Inclusion Decade Initiative.

The meeting will revise advances in Roma integration in the nine countries part of the initiative among which Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia and Slovakia, mediapool.bg said.

While in Bulgaria, Soros will meet representatives of state institutions and NGOs, involved in the initiative. Bulgaria currently holds the decade’s presidency.

Soros wanted to get acquainted with the problems Roma face in getting quality education. He visited a Roma school in Sofia’s Fakulteta residential district, where mainly people of Roma origin live.

The visit Soros made coincided with the visit of US president George W. Bush to the country. Soros is famous as one of the greatest opponents of Bush’s policy.
