Chimimport’s Dourankoulak Lake gas field caught fire on September 1; the flames could not be extinguished until September 2, Bulgarian-language daily Dnevnik reported. The gas field Dourankoulak is serviced by public holding company Chimimport’s division oil and gas studying and extraction AD.
The Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Waters said that, on September 2, fire fighters had succeeded in locating the fire and bringing it under control.
Fire fighters and the civil protection national service fought the flames for more than 24 hours by pouring water over the drilling installations. The causes for the flare up were not clear yet, the regional inspectorate said.
