On his visit to Bulgaria, French president Nicolas Sarkozy met with Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev. The two announced the signing of agreements of co-operation in several fields, including the military, nuclear energy, agriculture, education and culture.
The military co-operation consisted of two offset deals, Sarkozy told journalists. The first deal was a delivery order valued at 230 million euro and the second an order for four corvettes. A bi-lateral working group had been established to allocate the workload for the construction of the corvettes between Bulgarian and French shipyards.
Stanishev said the agreements of co-operation were very positive for Bulgaria and he was looking forward to their implementation. On education and cultural co-operation Stanishev said that Bulgaria would continue to be a francophone country, Bulgarians would continue to learn French and would continue to send students to France.
Both Sarkozy and Stanishev expressed their interest in tighter political co-operation between the two countries and with South East European region, including Kosovo.
Sarkozy said Bulgaria would be a full-fledged partner during the French EU presidency and that France would make no distinction between old and new Europe. Europe does not have two categories of member states, he said
After the press conference, Sarkozy had a meeting with the Bulgarian medics.
