Teams from the Natural Disaster Management Ministry (NDMM), the fire department and police are carrying out relief operations in the regions most severely affected by the August 6 2007 floods in the Bulgarian town of Tsar Kaloyan, the NDMM media office said.
Four people have so far drowned in the town, and there are five missing, including a child with its mother. Seven people have been admitted to hospital, according to Focus news agency.
Others have been evacuated. Most of the town is flooded, with water levels reaching 40cm to 60cm in places. Houses have collapsed, and power to the town has been cut as a precaution.
Torrential rains fell in Montana, 137 litres a sq m. The rain turned the streets into rivers and caused temporary electricity shortages.
Two villages in the region of Rousse have been seriously affected by the rain. A man drowned in the Rusenski Lom river. Most of the people living in the villages of Nisovo and Pisanets have been evacuated.
