FOUR CASES OF EU FUND EMBEZZLEMENT SENT TO COURT IN BULGARIA
15:21 Tue 10 Oct 2006

Four cases of criminal charges of embezzling EU funds had been forwarded to court, said Interior Minister Roumen Petkov after meeting European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) director-general Franz-Hermann Bruner.

Fifty-four cases of EU funds embezzlement had been uncovered in Bulgaria, Bulgarian news agency BTA said. Twenty-two were of embezzlement from the SAPARD programme, 20 from the ISPA programme and four from the PHARE programme.

Most of the cases involved documents being forged so as to embezzle money, BTA said.

Bruner said that OLAF was part of the EU monitoring of the reforms in Bulgaria.

Bruner said that he was satisfied with the changes in Bulgaria’s legislation. Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry had managed to improve its co-operation with the judiciary, he said.
