A joint agreement for all EU member states on mutual recognition of fines for driving violations will be enforced on March 22 2007.
Bulgaria’s traffic police will be allowed to send orders to other EU countries to impose fines amounting to more than 70 euros, mediapool.bg reported.
Foreign institutions could do the same when Bulgarian citizens violate regulations abroad.
Bulgaria would have problems collecting the fines as the country had shown ‘total incapability’ to collect fines even on its own territory, mediapool.bg said.
Interior Minister Roumen Petkov said that foreigners managed to escape fines in Bulgaria because traffic police was unable to impose sanctions.
A computer system sending information from traffic police to the border checkpoints was needed, he said. Such system will enable customs officers stop violators at the border.
