FIRES IN BULGARIA CLAIM TWO VICTIMS

Fires in Bulgaria have already claimed two victims.

A 75-year-old man with disabilities and his 73-year-old wife died during a fire in the village of Prisadets in Topolovgrad municipality, the regional police department in Haskovo said, as quoted by Bulgarian National Radio.

The flames destroyed a large part of the uninhabited houses in Prisadets and in the village of Filipovo in Topolovgrad municipality. The villages' residents have been evacuated to the nearby village of Radovets.

Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister Stefan Yurukov departed for the region of Sakar Mountain to get acquainted with the measures that had been taken to extinguish the fires.

The fire as already spread over an area of 32 million sq m of forests.

Another fire started near power plant Maritza Iztok-2 on August 26. Fire destroyed nearly 100 000 sq m of coniferous forests and 300 000 sq m of acacia forest.

Fire brigades managed to bring fires under control in Topolovgrad municipality. They are still trying to extinguish the fire in Svilengrad municipality.
