FEWER GERMANS INTERESTED IN BULGARIA AS TOURISM DESTINATION
09:03 Wed 26 Jul 2006

In 2000 Bulgaria was one of the most popular destinations for German tourists but since then interest has been going down, tourism experts in Germany said.

This is the main conclusion presented in German tourism publication Touristik Report. The publication summarises developments on the German market with respect to some of the more popular destinations.

Bulgarian tourism agencies failed to make use of the boom in 2000 to create loyalty among German tourists, Touristik Report wrote.

A number of German tourists returning from Bulgaria were not satisfied enough to return to the country’s resorts the coming year, the report said.

Some of the problems encountered in Bulgarian coastal resorts included over-population and ceaseless construction works, Touristik Report wrote.

At the same time tourism agency representatives said Bulgaria was no longer so competitive when it came to prices. Hotels in Bulgaria were nearly 10 per cent more expensive than the levels that would enable Bulgaria compete with Turkey, the publication said.

When will they learn. The Bulgarians could have had a very good ongoing toutist industry with the Germans: but no,they think that they can take us all for fools and because we pay thier prieces they think hey, we will put them UP. In Albena resort this year it will cost you to go by taxi 40lv. to go to Balchik that will cost you 2lv. on the Bus.They will see the same with the British before too long.

Siddy, to the degree your comments are accurate, it is a sad repetition of a common weakness in the ex-socialist countries: the non-existence of long-term planning and 100% attention focused on making a quick buck. So some Bulgarian operators made a quick killing one tourist season. What get-rich-quick scheme do they plan to do the next season, when the tourists refuse to return? Instead, they could have laid the foundation for a long term, stable industry.

I noticed too that service was not up to par. Generally, people were unpolite, terse, and tended to overcharge tourists. There seemed to be a lack of caring involved as well lack of attention to detail.

The problems with the Bulgarian tourist industry are numerous: ridiculous over crowding of hotels in Sunny Beach, destruction of all natural beauty, no infrastructure, dusty roads, inexperienced and under paid staff. This is quite unfortunate because the beaches are beautiful and with some planning and know-how, the Bulgarian coast could have competed with western resorts. I don't know why anyone still goes to Sunny Beach other than the relatively low prices: a beer there, as an example, is about 1 euro or less; it's 4-5 euro in Greece. Still, a tourist with a bit of money in his packet values his vacation time much more than the extra cost.
