10:59 Mon 26 Mar 2007

Bulgarian President Georgi Purvanov took part in the Berlin celebrations of the 50th anniversary from the signing of the Treaty of Rome.

The treaty of Rome which gave birth to the European Economic Community was signed on March 25, 1957 by France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg.

During the celebrations Purvanov met his German counterpart Horst Kohler and UK prime minister Tony Blair, as well as most of the forum participants, Bulgarian National Radio reported.

Among the subjects of discussion was the fate of the five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death for intentional HIV infection in Libya.

Purvanov told forum participants that Germany and UK have already clearly stated their support for the nurses. The problem remains part of the European Union engagements especially in view of the upcoming high level EU- Africa summit, Purvanov said.

Purvanov said that Bulgaria would participate actively in the fight against AIDS in Africa and particularly in Libya. At the same time EU had to take into consideration human rights and state its position concerning the Bulgarian nurses.
