EXPLOITATION RATHER THAN WORKER MIGRATION FROM BULGARIA PROBLEM FOR THE UK
09:03 Wed 13 Sep 2006

In an article entitled Stop Blaming Migrants- Exploitation is the Problem, The Guardian discussed UK fears over the migration of Bulgarian and Romanian workers, once the two countries joined the EU.

Over the past weeks employers and some officials called for restrictions on the migration of workers from the newly accepted member states. Fears arose over social problems and the fact that cheaper East European labour hand was going to take away jobs from local workers.

UK was experiencing increased unemployment levels, The Guardian reported. “It has always been tempting to scapegoat ‘the other’ when such economic difficulties come round,” the publication said.

Unemployment, however, did not result from the migration of East European workers, the article said.

The government could not impose strict limits to the movement of Bulgarian and Romanian workers. EU members could rely only on temporary employment restrictions for workers from the newly accepted countries, The Guardian said.

UK lacked skilled workers in some major fields, the report said. “Many sectors of the economy, such as health, social services and hospitality, would collapse overnight without migrant workers,” according to the article.
