Everyone should receive a salary that is in accordance with their effort as well as within the possibilities of the state budget, Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev said from India.
Stanishev replied to the demands from the teachers' unions for a 100 per cent raise per October 1 2007.
Bulgarian teachers have been threatening to go on strike September 15, with the start of the new school year, if their demands for higher salaries are not met.
The Bulgarian Government made a proposal on September 9 to raise the teachers’ salaries to about 920 leva by the end of 2008. The teacher's unions have rejected the offer.
Dimitrov proposed the introduction of an education tax on September 9 as a suggestion to how increases in teachers' salaries could be financed.
According to Stanishev, Dimitrov’s idea should remind people that expenses by the parliament have to be financed somehow.
