European commissioner for external relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner and German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier are to visit Libya, where they will discuss the fate of the five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death for intentional HIV infection.
Bulgarian authorities and the two officials co-ordinated their views before the trip.
The trip is part of EU’s efforts to find a solution and end the trial soon.
Recently, Brussels confirmed that talks between the EU and Libya are taking place. These aim to guarantee the freedom of the nurses and to aid the children infected with HIV in Libya.
Ferrero-Waldner and Steinmeier are expected to meet Libyan leader Muammar Gaddaffi and the head of Gaddaffi foundation Saif al-Islam. They will also meet relatives of the infected children, Reuters news agency reported.
The visit to Libya is to last two days. EU aims to find a solution to the case by the end of its German presidency.
Further details on the talks and the agenda of the visit have not been announced yet. The spokespersons of the two officials said that more information will be available on June 11.
