European Commission will examine the problem with the status of former Strandzha preserve.
Days ago the Supreme Administrative Court (SAC) ruled out that the Strandzha region would no longer be preserve because of ambiguity concerning its borders, Novinar newspaper reported.
All eco organisations opposed the decision, some even blocked traffic in the centre of Sofia to protest.
Bulgaria’s Green Party said that it would inform its European colleagues of the issue. According to ecologists, the region should be protected and part of the European environmental network Natura 2000.
According to the Green Party, illegal construction has been ongoing for years.
Bulgaria is one of the EU countries having largest bio-diversity and law does nothing to protect it, ecologists said.
Strandzha preserve represents one per cent of Bulgaria’s territory and is the largest protected area. Some of the animal and plant species living there are unique. The region houses nearly 68 per cent of Bulgaria’s bird species.
