EU READY TO INTRODUCE SAFEGUARD CLAUSES AFTER BULGARIA'S ENTRY
09:00 Tue 07 Nov 2006

In a report on EU enlargement strategies to be presented this week, the European Commission was going to say that it will introduce safeguard clauses after Bulgaria and Romania's union entry, in case these were necessary.

Recently Germany requested the introduction of safeguard clauses for the justice and home affairs sector of the two countries, mediapool.bg reported.

A number of European politicians said that the EC promised Bulgaria and Romania EU entry in January 2007, without the two countries being fully prepared.

One recommendation to deal with similar situation in the future would be the right of the EC to refrain from naming EU entry date, mediapool.bg reported.

Another EC recommendation to be announced on November 8 is a delay in EU enlargement to the Western Balkans. Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia and Albania achieved progress but cannot expect accession soon, the EC said.

The EU doors were still open to Turkey and countries from the Balkans region but these had to meet all accession criteria beforehand, the EU strategy said.
