Head of Germany's investigation office Klaus Jansen, who is EU's internal affairs rapporteur for Bulgaria, said that he hoped the European Commission (EC) would impose safeguard clauses in the justice and home affairs sector when the country joined the EU.
Jansen told Darik Radio that the time before the next EC evaluation report on the country's EU accession progress was too short and that unless the ruling parties made considerable efforts, the problems in the internal affairs areas would remain unsolved.
The previous week Jansen refused to visit Bulgaria and participate in a police labour union meeting as he was offered bodyguard protection. Darik Radio quoted Janses as saying that Bulgaria had become 'a forbidden zone' for him and that he would not visit a country where personal protection was needed.
Jansen was also disappointed by the fact Interior Minister Roumen Petkov refused to apologise for his comments on Jansen's crime report. When the report was issued, Petkov protested against the way the situation in Bulgaria was presented, which demonstrated Jansen's incompetence in Petkov's view.
Darik Radio quoted Jansen as saying that he was still waiting for Petkov to take the initiative and organise a meeting to discuss the problematic issue.
