European Union (EU) enlargement should stop after Bulgaria and Romania’s entry, according to European Commission’s (EC) president Jose Manuel Barroso and French prime minister Dominique de Villepin.
EU should first reform its institutions, they said.
Common European institutions were shaken by France’s and the Netherlands’s turning down of the European constitution during national referenda, Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) said.
Barroso said that he would be happy if Croatia entered the EU. Croatia hoped to access the union before 2009, BNR said.
Bulgaria and Romania’s EU accession marked a certain stage in the EU development, de Villepin said. EU had to improve its internal rules before moving to another stage, he said.
On September 26 EC is expected to recommend that Bulgaria and Romania enter the EU on January 1 2007.
