Members of the European Parliament said the privatisation of Bulgaria's Boyna Film Studios might limit the production of culturally diverse films in the country.
The concerns are listed in a letter to Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev, Focus news agency reported. If the American company Nu Image acquires the studios it might change the line of production, which contributed to the diversity of European cinematography, the letter reads.
The EP suggests moratorium on the deal, since a number of procedures seem to have been violated. A committee needs to investigate further the entire privatisation process, the EP suggested.
Boyana is a significant contributor to the European cinema. The association of Bulgarian film producers, as well as the European producers federation expressed concern over the deal, the letter reads.
Nu Image's presence threatens the independence of the Bulgarian cinema, EP members said.
The letter also points out Boyana Film has been the biggest studio on the Balkans since 1989 and should not be offered for privatisation if some irregularities occurred in the procedure.
