EU enlargement commissioner Olli Rehn presented the European Commission (EC)’s report on Bulgaria and Romania’s readiness to join the EU to the German bundestag, mediapool.bg reported.
Rehn assured German MPs that Bulgaria and Romania would not threaten the EU’s regulatory framework or EU policies.
The EU had sufficient resources to cope with possible problems caused by the two countries’ EU accession, Rehn said.
The EU would strictly supervise Bulgaria and Romania’s progress in the key fields of food safety, the use of EU agriculture funds, aviation safety, the judicial system and the fight against organised crime. The EU would use a new mechanism of accompanying measures to supervise the key fields, Rehn said, as quoted by mediapool.bg.
The EC was still specifying the details of this mechanism. If Bulgaria and Romania failed to carry out the reforms needed, the EC would impose sanctions such as decreasing EU funds, Rehn said.
Bulgaria and Romania’s progress had allowed the two countries to join the EU, he told the German MPs.
