Ethnic Albanian party rejoins Macedonian cabinet
11:58 Mon 24 Mar 2008 - Alex Bivol

The Democratic Party of Albanians (DPA) said it would rejoin the Macedonian cabinet after receiving assurances its requests for broader rights for the Albanian minority would be granted, Associated Press reported on March 24.

DPA pulled out of the cabinet of prime minister Nikola Gruevski on March 13, demanding that Albanian was made the second language of the country, raising the Albanian flag on top of local and central government buildings, as well as benefits for veterans of the 2001 guerrilla insurgency.

"DPA decided to rejoin the government coalition. Both parties agreed join teams to prepare laws allowing greater use of the Albanian language and flag and providing benefits for victims of the 2001 insurgency", government spokesman Veton Ibraimi said, as quoted by AP.

It was not immediately clear whether DPA's demand for the recognition of Kosovo would also be met, the agency said.

The agreement will allow Gruevski and his cabinet to focus on the major challenge on its agenda - reaching a settlement on the issue of the country's name before next week's Nato summit in Bucharest.

Macedonia hopes to receive an official invitation to join the bloc, which is widely seen in the region as a first step towards membership in the European Union, but Greece is threatening to veto it neighbour's application unless the two reach agreement on Macedonia's name.

Skopje wants to be admitted under its constitutional name, Republic of Macedonia, which Athens sees as implicit territorial claims over the northern Greek province, which bears the same name.
