EP postpones vote on Macedonia’s progress report
14:36 Thu 10 Apr 2008 - Elena Koinova

At the request of the Socialist faction, the European Parliament postponed the vote on Macedonia's progress report, Bulgarian BGNES news agency reported on April 10.

Socialist members of European Parliament (MEPs) requested more time to bridge differences with the Greek faction. The Greek MEPs insist on deleting a section of the report, which reads that Greece would not block Macedonia’s membership in international organisations. Most MEPs want to keep the report as it is.

During parliamentary debate, European Union enlargement commissioner Olli Rehn called on all political forces in Macedonia to focus on reforms rather than its name dispute with Greece, which would speed up the invitation to start EU accession talks.

MEP Hannes Swoboda said snap elections in Macedonia would be an unreasonable move. He called on Macedonian lawmakers to act rationally and try to find a solution to the discord within the ruling coalition.
