ENVIRONMENTALISTS STAGE AGAIN NATURA 2000 PROTEST IN BULGARIA
10:58 Thu 26 Apr 2007

For the seventh consecutive week, representatives of eco-organisations gathered in front of the National Assembly building in Sofia to protest against Natura 2000-related Cabinet decisions.

Environmentalists are discontent with the fact the Cabinet is still delaying its decision on the inclusion of various territories in the European nature preservation network.

One of the protesters, Dobri Nedev, said that people have brought soil from various parts of Bulgaria and will symbolically plant a tree.

Once Cabinet decided on inclusion in Natura 2000, the tree will be taken to the most suitable location.

Officials should not differentiate between areas and all-inclusive decision is expected, environmentalists said.

Each protester carries a sign with the name of one of the areas that still await Natura 2000 decision. Among these is the wild beach area Irakli, Kaliakra, Shabla Lake and the Western Rhodope Mountain region.
