End Hunger: Walk the World

On June 1, in Simeonovo district near Sofia, employees of TNT Bulgaria, UNDP representatives, their relatives and friends took part, for the sixth consecutive year, in a worldwide walk to raise awareness about child hunger. The event, entitled End Hunger: Walk the World, was organised by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). Famous Bulgarian alpinist Doychin Vassilev again led the walk in the foothills of Vitosha Mountain together with TNT Bulgaria country general manager Ivan Vassilev, a TNT media statement said on June 4.

The event took place as world leaders gathered in Rome for a high-level conference on World Food Security between June 3 and 5.

More than 1600 leva was raised from the event in Bulgaria. This will be transferred to the account of UN WFP "School Feeding Support" in Tanzania, which provides food for children during their school lessons to stimulate their education, while at the same time supporting their poor families.

Initial reports said that the global walk raised more than $500 000, which is enough to feed two million children for one day through WFP's school-feeding programme. Together with its largest corporate partners TNT and Unilever, more than 250 000 people from 70 countries took part in the walk from Indonesia to Guatemala. People crossed Malawi, Mbabane, Tanzania, Indonesia, Guatemala, Honduras, Jordan and Egypt as well as 25 European locations.

"Walk the World is the event toa raise awareness about the plight of children who suffer from hunger on a daily basis," said Peter Bakker, CEO of TNT. "At TNT we believe that hunger is unacceptable in today's world. I am proud that so many TNT employees, their families and friends on all continents of the world have actively taken part in this walk to show solidarity and to raise funds to give these children the daily meal they deserve."
