EMERGENCY INSTITUTE STAFF IN BULGARIA’S CAPITAL DEMAND HIGHER WAGES
13:09 Tue 22 May 2007

More than 50 doctors and nurses from Sofia’s Pirogov emergency institute protested on May 22.

Pirogov workers demand higher wages and better technical equipment.

Medics will protest every day until June 1, in case authorities fail meeting their demands by that period.

In case no response is received until June 1, representatives of all Pirogov clinics and divisions will start striking.

The May 22 protest is the third to take place. Pirogov representative of the Bulgarian Medical Union (BMU) Valentin Kurlev said that BMU is already negotiating with Pirogov’s management.

Medics said that the wage of a surgeon having 20-year experience is 514 leva. The monthly salary of a nurse is 269 leva.

Payment for extra work hours is not provided, Pirogov staff said.
