EMERGENCY INSTITUTE MEDICS IN BULGARIA'S CAPITAL PRESENT DEMANDS TO HEALTH MINISTRY
09:32 Wed 30 May 2007

Medics from Sofia's Pirogov emergency institute will send a declaration to Health Ministry and Parliament demanding higher salaries and better equipment, Bulgarian Medical Union (BMU) representative Valentin Kurlev said.

The declaration has been initiated by the branch and union organisations. Nearly 1500 Pirogov medics signed the document. Pirogov’s staff totals 2000 people.

Medics launched protest on the morning of May 30, which blocked the traffic in the region of the hospital.

Protest came about after government failed responding to the demands of the medics, Kurlev said.

Kurlev said that the protest is already out of control and it is uncertain how long it will last.

Over the past week, medics said that in case no response was received until June 1, they would launch a strike. Pirogov employees started their protest demonstrations on May 18.
