The office of Economic and Investment Bank (EIBank) at Sofia's road police has been broken into by unknown burglars. A bank stamp together with a small amount of money had been stolen, mediapool.bg said on February 11.
Although a road police spokesperson was not aware of the burglary, Sofia police directorate confirmed the robbery to mediapool. However, it said it did not know about the stolen stamp, but knew that money had been stolen. The burglars entered the road police building outside office hours after breaking a window.
EIBANK's public relations department told mediapool.bg one stamp and 151 leva had been stolen. The stamp was already cancelled, the bank said.
The internal security and surveillance system of the road police office was not activated by the burglary, mediapool.bg said. It had been the presence of this security system that was used as an argument to not allow EIBank to install its own security system.
The break-in, which took place last week, happens only half a year after the unprecedented theft of files and evidence from the building of Sofia police directorate in August 2007. However, there were no broken windows then and it was thought that an insider had been involved.
Last week local media reported that because of a lack of evidence and because it was unable to find the burglar, Sofia's Regional Prosecutor's Office had ceased the August 2007 burglary investigation. The Interior Ministry's assurance that stolen documents and evidence would not impede ongoing investigations brought little consolation, mediapool.bg said.
