ECOLOGISTS OPPOSE BULGARIAA BELENE NPP DEAL
09:00 Wed 08 Nov 2006

Bulgarias Prosecutor-General Boris Velchev and the Commission for Protection of Competition had to pay attention to the Belene nuclear power plant construction deal, political club Ecoglasnost head Ivan Sungarski said.

Ecoglasnost would present its protest declaration to the European Commission, Dnevnik daily reported.

The club had also presented a claim to the Supreme Administrative Court. The court would hear the claim on November 8 2006.
The requirements Belene project applicants had to meet predetermined that only Russian nuclear technologies would take part in the Belene tender, Sungarski said.

Further, Russian energy company Gazprom stood behind the two bidders, Russian Atomstroyexport and Czech Skoda Alliance, he said.

Russian media also confirmed that the choice of Belene project executor was political and served Russian economic interests. Bulgaria would turn into a satellite for Russias entry to the European energy market, Sungarski also said.

The Belene project was unprofitable for Bulgaria. Instead of protecting its national interest and investing in renewable energy sources, Bulgaria would have to pay in the forthcoming decades for that nuclear energy, Sungarski said as quoted by Dnevnik.
