ECOLOGISTS IN BULGARIA AGAINST 'SUPER BOROVETS' PROJECT
10:16 Thu 02 Feb 2006

Sega newspaper writes that the prosecution should investigate the Super Borovets project, according to ecological organisation Eco Rila, the For the Earth organisation and the Bulgarian Association for Alternative Tourism. Super Borovets envisions the construction of new hotels and ski tracks in the Rila Mountain.

Ecologists said the permission for construction contains irregularities. There were also irregularities in the registration of the Rila Samokov 2004 company. The Samokov municipality controls 25 per cent of the company and has provided public land for construction. The ecologists do not agree with the price for the public land. According to the evaluation, a sq m of land in Rila costs 3.7 leva. At the same time local people sell property for at least 30 euro a sq m.

An alternative project for Super Borovets has been developed. Ecologists are proposing a focus on adventure, cultural and rural tourism in the northern Rila region. Alternative tourism would make Rila all year-round attractive destination, ecologists said.
