ECOLOGISTS FROM BULGARIA AND THE BLACK SEA REGION CALL FOR ANTI-POLLUTION MEASURES
17:54 Wed 31 Oct 2007

Environmentalist parties from Bulgaria, Turkey, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Russia and Georgia demanded emergency summit of the Black Sea countries for the adoption of new measures against pollution of the Black Sea.

The demand was included in a declaration on the occasion of October 31, the day of the Black Sea, mediapool.bg reported.

According to the declaration, the pollution resulted in lost biodiversity and fish reserve.

The ecologists demanded control over the bio-diversity and drastic restriction on fishing.

Some 70 per cent of the pollution in the sea resulted from agricultural, domestic and industrial sources, located along the coast. They poured nitrogen and phosphorous compounds and sewage waste in the sea. The Danube River caused the rest of the pollution. In total 17 countries polluted the Black Sea, the environmentalists said.

Excessive fishing, on the other hand, changed the Black Sea food chain.

Obviously our governments do not take this catastrophe seriously, the declaration said. The problem could not be resolved country by country. Only international co-operation had a chance to be successful.
