ECOLOGICAL PROTEST IN BULGARIA ENDS IN ARRESTS OF ENVIRONMENTALISTS
09:00 Wed 04 Jul 2007

Police detained 35 ecologists on the night of July 2 2007 after protesting environmentalists blocked one of the main crossings in Sofia.

Ecologists protested against a recent decision of the Supreme Administrative Court (SAC) which took away the preserve status of the Strandzha region, mediapool.bg said.

Interior Ministry said that the most active ecologists were arrested. A policeman was harmed during the protests, the ministry said.

SAC decided that Strandzha Mountain could not be pronounced preserved area, because of administrative omissions and violations in its promulgation for national park in 1995.

Court abolished Environment and Water Affairs Ministers order for the setting up of natural park in Strandzha saying that the borders of the preserve could not be determined clearly.

SACs decision could be appealed, medipool.bg said. If the appeal fails, construction companies will have free access to the area.

Well what a surprise! Of course greed will always win over common sense in this country. Go on destroy all your beautiful nature and then see who still wants to live there!!! Thank god for a few Bulgarian environmentalists!Shame they had to be arrested instead of all those criminals who have built on beaches, blocked access to beaches and just blatantly flaunted building regulations all around the country.I'm deeply saddened...
