The European Commission (EC) will grant three million dollars by the end of August 2007 for the construction of detached houses for Roma people in Sofia, mayor Boiko Borissov said.
Local authorities were seeking for a place in the Suhodol residential district, suitable for the construction of the houses, Borissov said as quoted by Focus news agency.
The houses will be built for the Roma people who live in the residential districts of Batalova Vodenitsa, Zaharna Fabrika and Krasna Polyana
Another 132 detached houses will be ready in the beginning of September 2007 for the Roma people in Hristo Botev residential district.
According to Borissov, Sofia’s problems were not the Roma people that live in the city, but those who keept on settling in it. Severe measures for registration of those Roma were needed, he said.
Labour and Social Policy Ministry had to offer these people professional realisation in their home towns, he said.
