The European Commission (EC) monitoring report could stimulate EU members to ratify Bulgaria's EU accession treaty, President Georgi Purvanov said after his meeting with EC president Jose Manuel Barroso and enlargement commissioner Olli Rehn.
The EC report recommended Bulgaria's EU entry on January 1 2007 without the introduction of safeguard clauses. Three more countries, France, Germany and Denmark, have to ratify the treaty.
Purvanov and Barroso discussed Bulgaria and EC's future co-operation, Focus news agency reported.
Bulgaria's ambition was to be a strong, active member of the EU, a member that would make the union stronger, Purvanov said.
Barosso said that he believed “Bulgaria will be a loyal and active member of the European Union”.
