European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso called for the on-time accession of Bulgaria and Romania.
A decision would be taken on Tuesday, Barroso told BBC. He said no predictions could be made since different parties take the final entry date decision.
Barroso said he supported the EU accession of both countries in January 2007.
On-time accession would be good both for Europe and for the two countries, said he. It would make Bulgaria and Romania follow strictly the implementation of anti-crime and anti-corruption measures, said Barroso.
Three accession options exist, Bulgarian National Radio reported. Membership could become fact on January 1 2007 with or without the introduction of safeguard clauses. The third option includes delayed membership.
The final European Commission report on the two countries’ readiness to join the EU and its entry date recommendation are expected on May 16.
