European Commission's (EC) Communications Regulation Committee was preparing a questionnaire to request detailed information from all member states, including Bulgaria, regarding the introduction of the single European emergency number 112.
This was said by Euro commissioner for information society and media Viviane Reding in response to Bulgarian MEP Dushana Zdravkova's question regarding the introduction of 112 in Bulgaria, the press office of Dushana Zdravkova announced as reported by Bulgarian News Agency BTA.
In her response Reding explained she was informed of the serious delay of Bulgarian authorities to give access to all citizens to the 112 number.
In October 2007 the EC brought a suit against Bulgaria at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg because of the lack of access to the 112 number, BTA reminded.
Dushana Zdravkova said she would follow the development of the 112 number introduction process. She expressed her concerns regarding the fact that the Bulgarian government had informed the EC that by the end of 2009 pilot centres would be built and the system in the country would be expanded, but without giving an assessment of the expedience of the money used and without providing guarantees for the pilot centres' efficiency.
The lack of a common position of the institutions responsible for the 112 service, the unclear management and coordination of the system mechanism and the unspecified parameters of the service were other causes for concern, Zdravkova's press office said as quoted by BTA.
