EC LACKS OFFICIAL PROTESTS FROM LIBYA ON BULGARIAN MEDICS PARDON
15:54 Fri 27 Jul 2007

Libya had sent to the European Commission (EC) no official protest, related to the pardon of the life imprisonment sentences of the six Bulgarian medics, who returned home on July 24 2007, the office of European external relations commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner said.

Ferrero-Waldner led the negotiations for the release of the medics, Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) said.

The EC also lacked any official information on Libyas intention to break off the diplomatic relations with Bulgaria or to call on the League of Arab States to freeze its financial and economic relations with the country.

Libyan newspaper Libya Today reported of such intentions on July 27.

EC denied comments on the reports, BNR said.

Anonymous experts said that Libya would hardly receive the Leagues approval for such actions, as some of the members of the League, like Qatar, helped for the release of the medics.

On July 28 2007 at 11am Bulgarian time, Libyan authorities will give a news conference on the medics release, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.

Libyan prime minister Baghdadi Mahmudi and foreign minister Abdel Rahman Shalgham will assist the news conference.

They were expected to announce the circumstances around the Bulgarian medics released, AFP said.
