The European Commission (EC) said that it had not taken part in negotiations between Libya’s Gaddaffi Foundation and the families of the children allegedly infected with HIV by six Bulgarian medics.
On July 15 2007, the Gaddaffi Foundation said that it had reached agreement with the families each infected child that each family would receive $1 million.
According to the foundation, the agreement could lead to repeal or mitigation of the medics’ death sentences.
Christiane Hohmann, spokesperson for European Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner, said that the EC had not taken part in the negotiations between the families and the foundation.
Still, the EC would continue helping the infected children and their families through the fund established in their favour in 2005, she said.
Up to now the EC had granted the victims 2.5 million euro, she said.
