EC CALLS ON BULGARIA TO RECOGNISE OMO ILINDEN – MACEDONIAN MEDIA
12:38 Tue 18 Sep 2007

Vice President of the European Commission (EC), responsible for Freedom, Security and Justice, Franco Frattini has called on the Bulgarian government to respect the decision by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg and to register the OMO Ilinden party, according to Macedonian daily Utrinski Vesnik.

Frattini diplomatically avoided mentioning Bulgaria by name, but made it clear that respecting human right is a part of the EU directive, which all countries should adhere to, Focus new agency said.

Frattini's statement was a reply to questions MEP for the Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance Mikel Irujo Amezaga.

Amezaga asked how many Macedonians there are in Bulgaria, whether they have the right to self-define, whether the EC is familiar with the way they are being treated and whether there are violations of their rights.

Political parties from ethnic minorities should participate in our government. Many citizens and politicians are afraid to unite on this idea. (fear of loss of jobs, harrasement and interrogation by police, etc) Perhaps our neighbours - Macedonia has set some standards for all Balkan countries. We should learn from this model and the EU, to progress forward as a political and economically stable new EU member.
