After detailed analysis, the European Commission has concluded that the technology to be used in Bulgaria’s Belene nuclear power station was acceptable and would be able to provide the electricity needed in the region, said Ferran Tarradellas, spokeperson for Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs.
The EC did not find problems in the technology to be used at Belene and had decided not to oppose the construction of the plant, Tarradellas told Bulgarian National Radio (BNR).
Bulgaria and contractors building the plant would be responsible for the project during its construction. The EC’s responsibilities would begin when the plant would start operating, he said.
If Bulgaria and the company building the plant would fail to provide adequate protection against radiation, the EC could impose a number of sanctions.
One possible sanction was an official warning accompanied by instructions on steps to be taken immediately, Tarradellas said.
