15:40 Tue 21 Feb 2006

An earthquake with 4.2 magnitude on the Richter scale was registered in Southeastern Bulgaria. The epicentre of the earthquake is in the Kurdjali region.

The strongest tremor occurred yesterday at 7.20 pm, mediapool.bg reported.

Several chimneys fell and cracks appeared along the walls of building in affected villages in the Kurdjali area. No casualties have been reported. The tremors also disconnected phone line and tore down electricity cables.

Such type of earthquake is untypical for the geographic region, experts said.

Teams from the State Agency for Civil Protection examined dam walls but did not identify any damages.

Two patients with broken limbs entered a hospital in Kurdjali. The fractures resulted from falls during a hasty evacuation.

Tremors were also registered in northern Greek regions. On Tuesday night an earthquake occurred in the Aegean Sea. Its magnitude is four on the Richter scale. The epicentre is located west of the Turkish coast.
