It was high time for the discussion on Kosovo’s status to end, US president George W. Bush said during his visit to Albania.
The goal to be reached was independence, Bush said as quoted by mediapool.bg.
Bush suggested said that UN had to accept a resolution on Kosovo status within a certain time limit.
During the G8 summit in Germany, French president Nicolas Sarkozy said that the decision on Kosovo’s status should be postponed by six months. According to Bush such delay would be reasonable only if the state organisation of Kosovo was the main goal.
Kosovo would become independent, even if diplomatic efforts for determining its status in the UN Security Council failed, Bush said.
A draft resolution, based on the plan of UN’s Marti Ahtisaari, was presented to the Security Council in May 2007. The draft resolution suggests independence for Kosovo.
Serbia rejected Ahtisaari’s plan and Russia said that it could not accept it without Serbia’s approval.
Bus said that US will try to find a resolution that will satisfy both Russia and Serbia. A decision was going to be taken in any case and it was better for Russia to agree that Kosovo’s independence was necessary, Bush said.
