DOSSIER OPENING DEBATES IN BULGARIA GO ON
09:00 Thu 08 Jun 2006

Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) representative Yunal Lyutfi said that within a month the names of all former State Security agents would be announced.

Lyutfi said that a complete list naming all MPs, ministers, magistrates and public figures who were once State Security agents, should be made as soon as possible.

Lyutfi's suggestion for complete dossiers de-classification was supported by the ruling tripartite coalition, mediapool.bg reported. Present legislation hindered the free access to the State Security archives and should be reformed, Lyutfi said.

The former State Security intelligence service archives contain information on political repression during the communist era and evidence of high-level corruption. Dossier opening caused heated debates as several public figures were presented as former agents.

Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) leader Petar Stoyanov said that the ruling coalition lacked political will to disclose the classified information. His statement was grounded on the coalition's refusal to pass the UDF project for new dossiers opening measures.

The project aims at providing free access to all State Security classified information and making files management easier. Stoyanov said that this project would reveal crimes of the former communist party in Bulgaria.
